The Brick was created while attending the Werkplaats Typografie Summer School in Urbino, Italy. The workshop prompt was to respond to the idea of history in relation to the medieval city. What stood out to me the most about Urbino is the massive amount of bricks that were used to build Urbino atop of a mountain. Research revealed that the Romans had a special process for extracting clay from Urbino’s hillsides and firing the clay right on location. I followed the same process to make my own brick and matched the same specifications as the Romans had. For the final presentation, I released the brick from its mold and placed it in the city’s walls. This book documents the history and process.
